The 2 things that aren’t so awesome about Kartra

The 2 things that aren’t so awesome about Kartra

I love Kartra!
What’s Kartra?
It’s a super integrated marketing tool that brings together all the bits and pieces like email marketing, sales pages, payment processing, memberships, affiliate programs, video hosting, file hosting and more.
I did a whole video about why I love Kartra HERE.
But there are 2 things that currently bug me about Kartra so I wanted to let you in on those today. Let’s go!

So, yes – Kartra is my favourite toy to play with. It’s more affordable than CLickFunnels and it does all the things, so what are these 2 things that aren’s so awesome about it?

As of September 2019, they are:

  • Calendars
  • Having to work in multiple tabs

1. Calendars

So, Kartra has this cool feature called My Calendars and when they launched I thought “OMG! Another system I can do here in this one place!! Does it get any better?”.

And it turns out, no. Not for me, it doesn’t get better 🙂 because the calendars have a couple of limitations.

They don’t synchronize with each other so you could double book.

NO!!!!

So I contacted Kartra, thinking I was doing something wrong and they told me to simply set the booking to “Pending” then manually go in and confirm people’s appointment or tell them that they will have to choose another time slot.

What is the point of sending them to a calendar to choose a time slot – only to tell them that they have to go and choose another, different time slot?

No thank you.

Also, they are all set in US time and don’t convert very easily.

So, for now, we’re staying with Acuity thank you very much.

The workaround is to use the welcome email that gets automatically sent once someone purchases a session to direct the client to the Acuity booking function. Easy!

It’s all in the video if you want to have a look:

2. Multiple Tabs

The other thing that isn’t awesome about Kartra is the need to create one thing before another. I don’t know if those are the best words to describe what I mean, so let me give you an example.

If I want to create a product, there comes a point where I need to specify which sales page is for this product.

Solution:

Open a new tab, whip up a sales page and use that.

Then it wants a thank you page too!

Solution:

Same – same: in a new tab I make a thank you page then use that.

Similarly, when I want to make a membership, I need to allocate it to sales pages and sometimes a form or some other Kartra asset that isn’t built yet.

Now, this isn’t a real deal-breaker for me because I’m ok with having a few tabs open and switching between them, but it would be really nice if it was a bit more integrated or intuitive or something.

My demo in the video shows the dilemma best.

But don’t get me wrong!

I do love Kartra and totally recommend it at certain points in a businesses life. Comment below with any questions or book a free chat with me to figure out if it’s Kartra’o’clock for your business.

Should I Pay for Canva? Canva Free vs Paid

Should I Pay for Canva? Canva Free vs Paid

Let me just answer your question straight away…should you get Canva for work? Should you pay for Canva?
I don’t actually know!
But I can help you to see what you will get with Canva for work and help you to decide for yourself.
If all else fails, I recommend signing up for the free, 30-day trial and if you can’t live without the features once they’re gone, you should probably pay for it.
In this blog and video, I will show you the paid features and why I love them – then it’s up to you.

If you like, you can see the Canva for Work features for yourself in this video: 😊

The main features I love about the paid version of Canva are the brand kit, the free premium phots, and graphics, animations, being able to export images as a png file with a transparent background, magic resize and being able to upload fonts & access premium fonts.
So let’s run through those features briefly – I go into more detail in the video:

1. Brand Kit

The Brand kit basically allows you to create an easy to access section in every design with your brand colours. This is great for me since I create designs for many brands in my Canva, so being able to access the brand colours for all of my clients in one easy click saves me heaps of time.

Canva for work also lets you upload custom fonts and create a folder of logos.

It will really depend on your level of usage as to whether this feature will make or break the deal for you.

2. Access to premium images and graphics

When you pay for Canva you get access to Canva’s library of premium images and vector illustrations.

This was not a deal-breaker for me because I am a huge fan of Unsplash for gorgeous, free photos and Creative Market for vector designs but I hardly use those two resources anymore. I seem to be able to get all I need in Canva lately.

Scratch that, I do still adore Unsplash for royalty-free, stock photography

But, if you’re seeing a crown on some of the elements in Canva that you want to use or paying for them frequently, you might be better off paying for Canva for Work.

3. Transparent backgrounds in png

This feature is just a logo and website maker geek out I think but sometimes, you want to put your logo on a social media image without that white space behind it…you can do that if the background of your logo is transparent.

I don’t think I can explain it very well in words so check out the video if this isn’t making sense but basically, you can’t download your designs with a transparent background without the paid version – so if that matters to you as much as it does to me, you might want to pay for Canva.

4. Magic resize

This is one feature I really can’t live without and that I find saves me a lot of time.

If you create a design in one layout – for example as a Facebook post – and then you want to turn it into a Facebook header and an email header, you can do that with Canva for work in one click using the Resize option.

This is gold. Check out the video for a demonstration.

5. Access premium fonts

When you have Canva for work you can upload a custom font and use it inside your Canva designs.

This is really helpful if you are using an unusual or custom font that isn’t available in the Canva selection.

If you are creating a design and you like the look of the fonts with a crown beside them, you might be seeking more from the basic font selection.

Personally, I recommend that brands stick to a Google font for website and branding to make it easy but if you want to stand out in the font world, you might like to play around with some premium fonts.

If you are reading this and wondering WTF is Canva, you need to backtrack a little.

Personally, I use Canva nearly every day and I like it (mostly). Sometimes, we have a little quarrel (which may involve me losing a whole document of design work and wanting to throw my laptop at the wall) but mostly, I remember to click save and we get along alright.

If you are a proper graphic designer you are probably not going to like Canva and you should just go back to Adobe. But for the rest of us, Canva is a great, free option to get our online designs created.

Post your comments below and, if you’re new to Canva, I recommend that you check out the Canva playlist on my YouTube for more tips:

Ideal Blog Layout Template

Ideal Blog Layout Template

Have you ever written a great blog post and really nailed the layout and flow?
Maybe you’re wondering what makes a great blog layout?
Today I’d love to share with you, my take on an ideal blog layout that will optimise social shares, save you time (!) with a template and create easy reading for your audience.
Let’s go!

The video below shows you exactly how to do this step by step but let me outline some of the main points here for you too. You’ll find them under the video 😊

Ok – the main thrust of an ideal blog layout is to guide the reader with digestible bits of text, interspersed with images and scattered with social media sized images.
I strongly recommend you have a Pinterest sized image and you include videos and audios in your blog for accessibility and SEO.
I’ve also mentioned getting access to my template for the ideal blog layout which I’ve included below.
This process is really only suitable if you have a Divi themed WordPress website. If you do, go ahead and download the JSON file and uppload it to your Divi Librabry. Then it will be accessible in YOUR Divi librabry
I’ll be sharing step by step instructions on how to do that very soon if it sounds too tricky 🙂

Do you need a hand with your WordPress website?

I can help you I can also help with Wix and Squarespace. Book a free 30 minute chat now and let’s see what is working for your website and what you might change. We can also see if I am the girl for the job.

The 3 most common mistakes I’ve seen working with 150 clients

The 3 most common mistakes I’ve seen working with 150 clients

I’ve been serving women in their marketing for 3 years and in that time I’ve noticed a few patterns; a few things that people do over and over that can get in the way of growing their business. Things that stop them from making more impact and making more money. If I can save even one woman from making these same mistakes it will make my heart sing. So here goes:

The 3 most common mistakes I see made by smart women in business

1. Too much time on social media

I spoke to a woman the other day who spends 80% of her time on social media. She wanted to know how to make her time spent there convert into more $$ revenue in her business. At the moment she is converting her time into less than $150 a week. I nearly cried. Nearly every woman I speak to is spending too much time on social media. There are exceptions. Some women have really engaged audiences on their Facebook page and are hanging out here, in their comments, deepening relationships and selling spaces on their events, workshops and coaching packages). Most of them are worrying too much about how many times a day she should be posting, and kind of missing the point about what social media is for. Yes – people have gone viral and made a million dollars. Is that going to happen to you? Probably not. Social media is great for deepening relationships. It’s great for storytelling, delivering your product, brand building. It’s great for heaps of things but creating content and posting is not an end in itself. Sorry. It can be fun. But it is probably killing your creative flow in terms of better ways to use your energy. Like setting up a great lead magnet. And a nurture sequence. And nailing your message. And serving your peeps.

2. Boosting posts or running ads at the last minute

“Facebook ads” is one of my favorite marketing toys. It is the best place to spend money on advertising for most businesses. Mostly because of the huge number of people on Facebook and the quality of data/analytics that you get when you run ads. If you know what you are doing on FB ads, you can know for sure how many people saw your ad and what actions they are taking. That’s a lot more than you can get from running newspaper, radio or magazine ads not to mention flyers, F2F networking etc. BUT

If you want to just jump on Facebook ads a week before your event and throw $50 at an ad to get loads of ticket sales – it’s just not going to work.

As well as Facebook Ads having a bunch of nuances you need to be savvy to, ads work best within a strategy. Something like this: For 2-3 months before it’s time to launch my product/service, I’m going to take time to set up the before and after of my Facebook ad AS WELL AS use social media content like videos, images, and posts to allow people to get to know me. I might even run an ad to increase my reach and brand awareness so that when I’m ready to sell to these people, they actually know who I am, what I stand for and how I can help them.

3. No Video

Making videos in your business is going to move the needle. It’s a key marketing and business growth tool that you can’t afford to be leaving on the table. If you’ve only heard this everywhere lately you are probably going to scroll past this part of the article here too – because there’s something stopping you from doing video and you don’t want to be reminded about how important it is for growing your business! I am not going to ease up about it either. The two main reasons are both fear based and involve either:
  1. Perfectionism or
  2. Low self-confidence
If you think your case might be about perfectionism I suggest you go ahead and watch my incredibly cringe-worthy YouTube video that has had over 45,000 views on YouTube. What you can learn from this: You can win even with imperfect video. Why this video performed well:  It gave people an instant win.
Other arguments that perfectionism might make:
  • I need better gear
  • My backdrop is not good
  • I make mistakes when I do a single take
  • I want it to be good
I disagree. You don’t need anything more than a smartphone or your computer and the free version of Zoom to create a video today. You only need to create a 1-meter nook in your home with decent light to create a backdrop – the rest of the house can be a bomb site No-one minds if you get a word right. It makes you fallible, loveable and real. You become an imperfect person that others can relate to. Relatable. Did you see my video? Was it good? I recommend you talk about something you know inside and out, and that you don’t scratch your nose and your bra endlessly and your video will easily be better than mine. If it’s a self-confidence issue: Get some coaching. and/or Just make some videos anyway and don’t share them with the world immediately. Get used to seeing and hearing yourself. OR Don’t watch them back. Just post them on your Facebook page. And then look at your analytics. See how well video performs? It outperforms any other kind of post on Facebook PLUS it’s let’s people get to know you while you: clean the house, spend time with your friends and family, lie on the beach etc.

Ready to leave these mistakes behind and get set up for success?

I know you’re ready to stop making the same mistakes over & over. Imagine how great it will be to sit down at your computer every day knowing what you’re going to do & why. Stop dreaming – join me on the Elevator. Grow your email list – MailChimp tutorials

Grow your email list – MailChimp tutorials

Once you are set up on MailChimp you might be ready to grow your list and have more people you can communicate with who are interested in your business.

I have pulled together some of my most watched MailChimp tutorials to help you grow your following, create more impact and make more revenue in your business.

You can get sign-ups from your website

Keep the conversation going.

Once people have checked you out on your website, it’s important to stay in touch with them and allow them to move along in their customer journey with you. A website sign-up form is a great way to do that.

If your website uses a builder….

Then it’s slightly different…

Here’s an example of putting a sign-up form on a website with a builder. This time you need a tiny piece of code. I’ll show you how.

What about automations?

These are also called nurture sequences…

Here’s how you can give a lot of love to your followers. This is likely to help them get to know you and be more ready to buy.

Once people sign up you might like to send them to your website…

Maybe you want to deliver an eBook or up-sell to another product…

MailChimp has got you covered. Here’s how:

Do you have an eBook you want to give to people?

You can do that using MailChimp.

Once you have it read as a pdf. file you can deliver it using MailChimp. Here’s how:

And now you’ll need a landing page to get your eBook in front of people

You can use the free version of MailChimp to create a branded landing page for your eBook.

Here’s how to set it all up so it’s branded and appealing – not like the simple sign up form.

After you’ve given the free eBook..

It’s a good idea to mention a paid service or product.

Here’s how to make a template from a previous email you sent out.

Move people from one list to another

If you’ve run a challenge or webinar you might want to add people to your main list.

The best ways to build your lists is with great freebies. Challenges, mini-trainings with multiple videos, webinars, and masterclasses are all great options. And then afterward you’ll want to move those participants over to your main newsletter list to keep the conversation going.

Notifications for new subscribers

Do you want to hear from MailChimp for every new subscriber you gain?

Whether you want to hear from MailChimp more or less often, here is how to edit your notification settings.
